Project CICADA

- Project CICADA
Modern cities need smart solutions for climate adaptation.
Learn more about CTAPPThe CICADA project builds upon our successful European projects VALORADA and Pathway2Resilience, creating a unified platform for urban climate adaptation. Our CTAPP solution provides urban planners, climate officers, and infrastructure managers with practical tools to combat climate change impacts. Through spatial dashboards, predictive models, and planning tools, we help cities identify risk areas and design targeted interventions – from tree planting and green infrastructure maintenance to heat mitigation measures during extreme weather events.
We connect satellite data, urban infrastructure, and citizen voices into one integrated system.
Our platform addresses the growing challenge of urban heat islands and climate vulnerabilities by providing actionable insights based on real-world data. Cities can now move beyond traditional reactive approaches and implement evidence-based adaptation strategies that protect their most vulnerable populations and critical infrastructure.
CTAPP (The Climate Transition App)
Integrating different information sources into one functional tool
The uniqueness of CICADA lies in integrating different information sources into one functional tool. While traditional platforms work either with satellite data or participatory tools, our system creates connections between satellite-based risk data, local infrastructure, and citizen perception.
Our application enables citizens to report locations with thermal discomfort, enriching the platform with valuable field information. Through the concept of Climate Impact Chains, we can better prioritize measures and align urban planning with local exposure and sensitivity data. This ensures interventions are both scientifically sound and community-relevant, making climate adaptation more effective and socially accepted.
Benefits for Cities
From reactive crisis management to proactive climate resilience.
CICADA brings immediate and long-term advantages to cities. In the short term, they gain a transparent method for identifying climate vulnerabilities and planning adaptation measures. Long-term, it supports the transition from reactive crisis management to proactive, cross-sectoral climate resilience governance. Results include better coordination between departments and more efficient investments in green infrastructure.
The platform enables cities to measure their progress through key performance indicators including the number of municipal actions prioritized using CTAPP outputs, spatial coverage of risk-monitored areas, and the proportion of citizen-reported hotspots addressed in action plans. This data-driven approach helps cities demonstrate the effectiveness of their climate investments and secure continued funding for adaptation measures.
Implementation and Partnership
Built for scale, designed for European-wide implementation.
Developed by an experienced consortium, CICADA brings together ASITIS s.r.o. as project coordinator and climate adaptation lead, World from Space s.r.o. as technical and satellite data expert, and CzechGlobe providing scientific excellence in climate impact research. Our solution is designed to scale and is interoperable by design – built on open standards such as OGC, GeoJSON, WMS/WFS, and compatible with local systems through RESTful APIs.
The platform integrates seamlessly with standard urban data ecosystems including GIS, open data portals, and municipal dashboards, and can be deployed via cloud, hybrid, or on-premise architecture. Based on a completed feasibility study, we’ve identified strong demand from municipalities with 5,000+ citizens, with major adoption expected in cities of 10,000+ inhabitants. Early adopters are European cities committed to SECAPs, ICLEI, or Mission adaptation monitoring systems but lacking analytical support for implementation. The SPACE4Cities PCP provides the ideal environment to mature and operationalize our solution through municipal partnerships, laying the foundation for Europe-wide deployment.
