Copenhagen (Denmark)
UpGreen analysed approximately 280,000 trees across the city. Results show that around 20 percent of trees have below average productivity, indicating reduced photosynthetic performance and a higher risk of declining cooling and carbon benefits, especially in central and coastal districts.
Lisbon (Portugal)
The analysis covered 306,834 trees with crown areas larger than 30 m². Results reveal widespread reduced productivity during summer, driven by water scarcity, with many trees closing stomata to limit water loss, directly lowering cooling capacity and carbon sequestration across most of the city.
Kuřim (Czech Republic)
UpGreen assessed 16,916 trees within the city. The results show clear differences in productivity between neighbourhoods, highlighting trees that underperform despite low visible stress, providing an early signal for targeted maintenance and renewal planning.

What is tree productivity, and how we measure it?

In UpGreen, tree productivity shows how actively a tree is growing and photosynthesising. It reflects chlorophyll levels and leaf performance, making it a reliable indicator of tree vitality and overall health.

We measure productivity using satellite time series data that track vegetation activity throughout the growing season:
For each individual tree, we analyse satellite signals and create a smooth seasonal growth curve.
We identify the main growing period and calculate how well the tree performs over the season.
The shape of the seasonal curve also helps distinguish between broadleaf and conifer trees.
The result is a clear, comparable measure of how well each tree is actually performing, not just how green it looks on a single day.
