The analysis covered roughly 300,000 trees across Lisbon’s administrative units. Due to strong drought and heat stress, total carbon sequestration is lower, at around 3,300 tonnes of CO2 per year for the whole city.

In Kuřim, UpGreen analysed approximately 17,000 trees, providing detailed tree level outputs on productivity and condition. The results show how even smaller municipalities can quantify carbon sequestration and identify where tree care and renewal will most effectively protect long term climate benefits.

What is carbon sequestration and how do we measure it?
Carbon sequestration is the process by which trees remove CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and store it in biomass. In cities, it is one of the most tangible mitigation benefits of healthy, well managed urban trees.
In UpGreen, carbon sequestration is estimated for each detected tree crown segment and aggregated to grids and administrative units. The method:
differentiates broadleaf and conifer groups, because they differ in chlorophyll signals and typical sequestration rates
assigns a potential sequestration level based on tree type and crown area
scales that potential by real tree productivity derived from vegetation index signals, so stressed or low vitality trees are estimated to sequester less than healthy ones
